I hope that you have all settled in well and was clear about the introduction up to date. Please do go through the slide handouts that I had passed you and the notes for Chapter 1: The Media and Modern Culture.

Do read through them and familiarise yourselves with it.

I would also like you to peruse through some websites and get a better idea on Vox-pops, as we will be discussing them in the following week.

Let's also try and make this forum an effective and communicative one by posting your thoughts in the class, put up any suggestions you may have, or questions regarding the lectures or even post up any websites that you may come across that relates to our topics.

mrs amelia, i just hav read some of the artical but i did not understand it.
first is that i dont know mostly any of the celebrities. so i dont know the real n the spin.

Dear all, I need you to do these things over the 'long' chinese new year break that you will be having;

1) log on to E!online (at the website address that I gave you on one of the slides), then choose an article on a celebrity to analyse (you need to guess what the 'reality' and then you need to further 'spin' the written story). following that, post your comments on our MPA yr 11 forum, by next Wednesday.

2) In your groups, you need to do a VOX-POP based on the topic listed on your slide. Record the interviews on your video camera. Bring it in to class on Thursday, 29th of January, for us to view and discuss

Reality ---> Russel Crowe dislocating his shoulder
- Zellwegger playing the role of a depression-era wife
- Filming of 'Cinderella Man' delayed by a week
- Zellwegger receiving the $3m payment from the insurer

'Spin' ---> Insurance agency wants to make sure that Zellwegger was not having a fine
time during the break that she was being payed for.
- Funding agency of production payed $6m !!! for Russel Crowe's injury ..
- Attorney asking for all of Zellwegger's accounts and records of the break.

Conclusion : Most of the aspects of the article sound real, however when one thinks about it, minor details sound slightly unrealistic. For example, I would suppose that it would be highly unlikely and odd for a high-end hollywood actress to justify and expose their actions. Would Zellwegger really give the attorney all the details of where she was, what she was doing, and how much she spent during the seven-day break ?

Probably not. Instead, the agents would simply move on with it, because they were the ones who gave the actress the 3 million dollars, and four years on, they are in no position to either regret that , or demand for Zellwegger to refund the cash.

ms amelia, can i photocopy everything by tuesday? i was stuck with that report for united nations that i could not get it done on friday. and that shop is closed over the weekend... ? ((: sorry!
